Why study Media?
This course allows you to combine a theoretical understanding of the mass media in society with the detailed analysis of texts taken from a wide range of media. Its exciting practical element allows you to develop your creative and technological capabilities. It will help you to understand a very powerful force in our society, and is a good preparation for a variety of higher education courses.
What will I study
AS Units
Module 1
Textual Analysis (15% of total A Level; 1hr 30 min exam)
Analysis of the use of codes in moving images; exploration of representation.
Module 2
Audience and Institutions (15% of total A Level; 2 hour exam)
Assesses your knowledge and understanding of media institutions, production processes, technologies and related issues concerning audience consumption and reception.
Module 3
Foundation Production (20% of total A Level; coursework)
You plan, create and analyse a print-based advertising campaign.
A2 Units
Module 4
Critical Research Study (15% of total A Level; 2 hour exam)
Assesses your ability to independently research, investigate and analyse a media topic and present the findings. You choose one topic from a list.
Module 5
Media Issues and Debates (15% of total A Level; 2 hour exam)
Study of three critical issues in Media Studies, one relating to Broadcasting, one to Film and one to Print. Two questions will be answered in the exam.
Module 6
Advanced Production (20% of total A Level; coursework)
You will produce a media product and a 3,000-word evaluation, discussing the project in relation to institutions, audiences and media theories.

How will I study?
A mixture of whole class and group discussions, written investigations, and small group and individual practical work, utilising various media technologies.
What do I need to start the course?
Course entry recommendation is B grade in GCSE English or GCSE English Literature or B grade in Media Studies GCSE.
